Registered Nurse

Career Profile
Nursing is the "prevention of illness, the alleviation of suffering, and the protection, promotion, and restoration of health in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations". (ANA 2003) Nurses engage in nursing care through three primary roles: As Provider of Care, the nurse gives direct physical care to the client. As Coordinator of Care, the nurse works with the health care team to get the client's needs met by the best possible provider available. As a Member of Profession, the nurse maintains high ethical and legal standards for the delivery of care. Nursing decisions require critical thinking and knowledge of the nursing process.

Job Outlook
Employment of Registered Nurses in Texas is projected to continue to grow faster than the average occupation through 2010. A current and projected shortage of RNs has spurred efforts to attract and retain qualified RNs by employers. Shortage is primarily due to an aging RN workforce and recent declines in nursing school enrollments.

Salary
ADN positions have an average starting salary of $19.00-$23.00/hr.
