Frequently Asked Questions
Eligibility & Qualifications
Some applicants may not meet all of our eligibility requirements right away—but that doesn’t mean the door is closed. For example, if you’re self-employed and your income was too high last month, you can still attend an info session and ask questions. We can wait for your income to fall within the guidelines to verify eligibility and move your application forward.
If you’re missing other qualifications, we may be able to keep your application on file and follow up when you’re eligible. Reach out to us. We’re happy to talk through your options. Send us a question here
Yes, many Capital IDEA students work part-time or even full-time while attending school, though that can be very challenging. Your ability to manage both classes and work will depend on the flexibility of your employer. Be sure they’re on board to help you make your schedule work around your classes. We support over a thousand students each semester who are balancing work, school, and family responsibilities. It can be done. You’ll need to manage your time carefully and keep your Career Navigator updated so that they can support you and offer guidance.
Yes, you can apply to Capital IDEA if you’re currently enrolled in one of our partner colleges, Austin Community College (ACC) or Temple College. You must meet our other eligibility requirements and be in a career track we sponsor. If accepted, we will sponsor the remainder of your degree or certification. However, we do not retroactively pay for any classes you’ve already completed.
An applicant’s income is most often determined by their income and the income from a spouse or partner, if applicable. The most common types of income are: wages, unemployment, self-employment, retirement, or social security benefits. Do not include income from roommates or adult children (18 or older) who live with you. If you don’t have any income of your own, the person supporting you must write a letter of financial support. If you’re a recent high school graduate living at home, the same applies. Your parent or guardian will need to provide a letter to confirm they’re supporting you. We do not use your parent or guardian’s income to determine your eligibility. Still unsure, send us your question.
Whose income do I count when applying, and does my parents’ income matter?
If you already have a college degree from the U.S., you may still qualify if your degree isn’t valid for employment, or you’ve earned a general studies associate degree. Contact us to see if you might be eligible for an exception.
If your degree is from another country, you can have it evaluated by ACC for transfer, and we may be able to support you in completing additional credits towards an associate degree, if needed.
You don’t have to be 100% certain, but you should have a general idea of which career field you’re interested in. Start narrowing down your options and see if one of our supported career paths in healthcare, tech, trades, etc., feels like a good match. If you’re leaning toward two similar careers, we can help you talk through the decision as part of the application process. Before you’re accepted, you should have a clear choice and be able to explain why the career you’ve chosen is a good fit for you.
Maximum Income
Your gross income (before taxes) must be at or below the maximum monthly amount listed for your household size.
To apply for Capital IDEA, you must attend an info session—either online or in person. These sessions provide important details about the program and next steps. If you previously attended an info session more than six months ago, please attend a new session as some information may have changed. You can find upcoming dates and register here.
If you’ve previously applied, contact us, and we’ll help you move forward. Your next step may include updating your application, resubmitting documents, or rescheduling missed appointments. But don’t worry, we often work with reapplicants. You’re always welcome to start again when you’re ready.
Yes, you can apply. We’ve accepted, graduated, and placed students with criminal records in the past. Just keep in mind that if you chose a career that requires a license, you’ll need to receive approval from the licensing board before we will sponsor you in that degree program. Degrees requiring a license are marked in our Career Directory.
There is no cost to participate in Capital IDEA. We cover the full cost of tuition, textbooks, required supplies, and certification exams. While we may occasionally help with emergency needs, we do not cover regular living expenses or monthly bills. Some optional costs (like extra materials or optional books) may not be included, but everything you need to complete your degree is fully covered.
College & Classes
That depends on your starting point and the career path you choose. On average, students graduate in 2.5 to 3.5 years.
Most Capital IDEA students take 3 to 4 classes per semester, which equals about 9 to 12 credit hours. You’ll be expected to move through your program as efficiently as possible.
Some evening and weekend classes are available through ACC and Temple College, but most courses are held during the day. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to complete your program entirely at night or on weekends.
Yes. Capital IDEA will support some ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for students who are pursuing one of our sponsored career paths. We cover the cost of Level 3 and 4 classes at Austin Community College. If you need Level 1 or 2, you’ll need to complete those on your own before applying. If you’re at Level 3 or 4, you can start your application now. If you’re unsure of your level, you can take the free ESOL assessment at ACC to find out.
